Wheat...West coast wheat bids surged higher this week in tandem with
the explosive rally across the futures complex. Even with a shrinking
basis to Chicago futures, white wheat prices moved to the highest level
since late May of 2024. In the process, hard red winter also widened the
premium over dark northern spring wheat. The Pacific Northwest winter
wheat harvest picked up pace this week in the midst of extreme hot and
dry conditions.
Weekly Sales...USDA reported a softer week of export demand for U.S.
wheat, coming in 38% below the four-week average at 8.6 million bushels.
Commitments of 233 million bushels stand 23% below a year ago and 10%
off the five-year average pace. Both soft red winter and hard red spring
booked 2.8 million bushels, with commitments for the latter setting at
68 million bushels, which is 20% below a year ago and 14% below average.
Hard red winter saw less than a million bushels in sales and with 57
million in commitments, sets 52% below a year ago and 27% below average.
Soft white wheat booked 2.3 million bushels and with 65 million bushels
in commitments, sets 55% ahead of a year ago, 30% above average, and at
the best level since the 2017/18 marketing year.
Top Buyers...White wheat export demand is off to a strong start this
year, up 22 million bushels from this time last year. Increased demand
from the Philippines, South Korea, Japan and Unknown account for most
of the difference, along with increased purchases from Panama, Chile,
and Bangladesh.
